Yiska had both and pleasant and an unpleasant wake-up call the morning of the pups' first outing. It was barely past dawn when all of them jumped onto his side, almost knocking the breath from his lungs. He rolled over, groaning and gasping as he tried to breathe, but found himself smothered by small, writhing bodies. With a little effort he stood with a playful rumble. A couple of pups who had been clinging to his fur slid to the ground. All were howling with laughter. He yawned. "You guys," he complained, "Why did you do that? I was having such a nice dream. Your mother and I were taking a long, romantic stroll on the beach at sun--" "Ew!"[/b] several pups shrieked in unison. "Dad, don't tell us about that," Fern whined. Yiska roared with laughter. "But--" "No!" giggled Mica, still rolling on the ground with delight. "All right, all right," said Yiska, yawning again. He laid down, pretending that he didn't notice that the pups were by now nearly bouncing off the walls. Bausil seemed deeply offended by this. "You promised we could go outside today!" he shouted indignantly. Yiska grinned at him. "That I did, that I did." These words made the pups even more excited. A cacophony of excited "Can we go now?"s and "Let us out!"s ensued. Yiska chuckled again. "Okay, guys, chill out. Go outside." Not needing to be told twice, the pups flowed out of the den, their yelping growing thunderous. The father followed them quickly outside, where the morning sunlight was beginning to slant through the trees. It was not cold except in comparison to the warmth of the den, and many of the pups commented on the temperature before anything else. Almost immediately though, a giant roughhouse began that included every one of the pups. Yiska watched almost helplessly. So many pups were sure to get into trouble; it was only a matter of time. He wished Placid were here, but she had gone off to meet some upstart new alpha, leaving poor Yiska to watch the pups all by his lonesome. But he was determined. He watched his offspring closely as they tumbled and rolled around the meadow.
After a few minutes they tired a little and started toward the lake, the first body of water that many of them (not some of the mischievous ones, who had sneaked out of the den before) had seen. The alpha followed them as they investigated and lapped at the water, mystified. A large fish leaped out of the water a few yards away, and many of them darted away from the shore a few feet, timid of it. Yiska approached. "That, boys and girls, is called a fish. It won't hurt you. They breathe water and are good to eat." Awed murmurs rose from the group and, their curiosity satisfied, started to run along the shoreline. Yiska followed them still, amazed by the shortness of their attention spans and their energy.[/blockquote]
