In his peripheral vision Yiska saw his son begin to follow him and the alpha picked up his pace until he was loping quickly, his instinctual competitiveness kicking in, driving him forward. It took several seconds for him to realize that something was wrong. He could not hear his son's pawsteps behind him. He slowed and turned, searching the meadow--and his jaw dropped at the scene before him. About forty yards behind him his son was being lifted into the air by a hawk--a gigantic one indeed to be able to pick up something as heavy as a wolf pup. This time around, Yiska didn't freeze when he realized the crisis. He bursted into what felt like the fastest sprint he had ever run, his yellow eyes glued to his slowly-ascending son. In an instant his mind judged his projection through the air and he leaped as high as he could, jaws wide, hoping with all his heart that it was enough to reach his pup.
Koda felt hard talons sink deeper into the back of his neck, and another yelp escaped his maw. Suddenly, he heard Lune call for help from their parents, and Koda realized the call was for him. He saw Sorrel staring at him cruelly, a gleam of slight laughter in her eyes. Hatred towards his sister burnt him deeply, and suddenly, he could see his father charging forward. His father leaped, landing a few meters too short. In fear, the hawk dropped Koda, and immediately, Koda felt the pain subside. He fell the distance he had risen, and hit the ground with a thud, and another yelp. He could feel the blood seeping through his coat. He closed his orbs, and instantly felt a calming feeling, the pattern of his mothers tongue, combing his fur softly. He opened his one eye, and saw the worry on his mothers face, in a blurry fashion, and then, his hearing began to fade, everything sounding like a buzz. It was like he was a puppy again, eyes and ears only beginning to open. Although it was all backwards, and soon, he had lost all senses.
Placid had been sitting with Sorrel, when suddenly, a yelp and holler was heard. Spinning around faster than a blur, she saw Koda slowly inclining. She was about to go rescue her son, when she saw Yiska, blurring as he raced across the clearing. He leaped, landing a couple meters short. She began to panic, she was already in movement when Koda dropped, and she rushed forward, licking him and trying to clean the blood of her own pup. She looked at Yiska, trying to hold back her whimpers. "Yiska.. Is he going to be okay?" she asked in fear, still licking him as he went limp, unconscious. What if she couldn't save him. Another help was audible to her ears. Spinning around, pausing her licking for one second, she could see Fern, disappearing into the trees. Her body twitched as she took off faster than she's ever moved before, and disappeared into the forest, racing faster and faster. Another yelp was audible, and suddenly, Placid knew, almost immediately, Fern was dead. She slammed on the breaks, and let out a long whimper. Standing for a moment, she let a few tears slide down her visage, before returning to injured Koda. She continued wiping the blood, unsure of what else to do. She kept her eyes on Yiska, hoping he knew too, and that she wouldn't have to tell him.
the past is a wonderful place to visit, but not to stay
Almost as soon as he left the ground Yiska knew his lunge had been insufficient, and his heard seemed to disappear from his chest. His son. Dead. Eaten by a vulture like some hare or mouse. It wasn't even a good way to die, preyed upon by a lesser animal.
Yiska's eyes never left Koda as the hawk released him and both pup and father fell back to earth, but the alpha didn't realy register that his pup was safe after all until he heard the hair-raising thud of Koda's body on the earth. Yiska closed the few feet between them at once and bent over his son, nudging him with his muzzle to try to keep him awake. "Koda," he whined, terrified, "stay with me, stay with me...." Suddenly Placid was at his side, doing the exact same thing. Probably the pup had broken limbs or ribs when he had fallen. I don't know, Yiska answered his mate's question in his head, heart racing as Koda's eyes closed. "Yes" was what he said out loud.
With a dismayed look at Placid Yiska bent down to pick up Koda, but jerked around instead at the sound of another Yelp from across the meadow. Fern. He started to run toward the spot where her body had disappeared into the forest, but Placid was already racing that way, and instead Yiska turned back to Koda, picked him up gingerly in his jaws and carried him the few meters to the den, passing by the rest of the pups without so much as a thought or glance. He laid Koda down inside the den and darted back outside. "Go sit by the den, all of you," he ordered the pups. "Don't go inside."
[/b] Then he returned his attention to Fern.
Another yelp echoed across the clearing and Placid stopped abruptly, hung her head and turned around, coming back. Yiska's jaw dropped. How could she just...abandon Fern? She wasn't even going to try to look for her? After a moment of disbelief he started forward, snarling viciously had Placid as he passed her, and continued to race toward the forest to search for his daughter. Moments later he vanished into the brush.[/justify][/blockquote]
She watched as her father and mother began to rush to Koda's aid after he hit the ground. Her ears flattened and she then turned her head seeing Fern taking off in the bushes. She had started to rush after her when their mother was already doing it. But then she saw her stop after hearing Fern's yelp. The pup knew Koda was hurt and Fern had just ran off and for an odd reason wasn't coming back.
A soft whimper had escaped her maw as she watched her dad pick up Koda and carry him towards the den without even a word. Then he came back saying "Go sit by the den, all of you," and not to go inside. Blinking she watched him go past her and the rest of her siblings and start after Fern.
Looking towards the den she took off towards her brother. Once she reached the outside of it she could see Koda's form just within and she laid down close enough to her nose touched his for a brief moment showing she was with her brother.
Yes was such a simple answer, but yet, somehow, Placid knew that yes wasn't the answer he wished to give. But she appreciated the fact he had attempted to make her feel better anyway. It was a simple thought, but yet, amazingly sweet. The same reason she had decided he was the one in the first place.
Racing after Fern had seemed like it had kicked her in the gut, but when she gave up, Yiska did something she had never before thought he would ever do. He raced past her, snarling at her. Placid flinched back in confusion and terror, as though he was a murderer and she was still a young pup. Her body seemed to give in as she crumpled together, trying to make herself small. And then, she saw her pups. He pawsteps were light and quiet as she made her way over to them. She gave each one a reassuring kiss, and immediately realized Lune was missing. Her orbs searched frantically, when suddenly, she spotted her pup touching noses with Koda. A sigh of relief escaped her. She looked over each pup slowly. "Stay here. If anyone leaves, they're grounded to the den for three weeks," She snapped, her threatening stare meeting each pups eyes. It was an order, not a request. Then, with light leaps, she raced through the clearing, and stopped on the edge of the forest. Perhaps Yiska didn't know Fern was dead? "Yiska," she whispered quietly, glancing back at her pups, "Yiska, please.. She's gone," she whimpered, her voice, and her heart breaking. She let knees give, and stood there, crumbled up, at the thought of letting another life slip away so easily. It was her fault.
the past is a wonderful place to visit, but not to stay
As soon as Yiska reached the forest he caught the strong, sour scent of lion. A low growl started in his throat. Of course that cat would come back. Of course it would strike while his back was turned. That's what cats did. He slowed and put his nose to the ground, following the scent quickly and quietly. Relentlessly. That monster would not escape with his daughter, dead or alive. Not that she was dead, no. Impossible. Fern was not dead.
Soon the scent trail lead him to the same stream that Sorrel had fallen into. A large splotch of blood seemed to materialize on the ground in front of him. Acutely aware that the more time passed, the less likely it was that Fern was alive, Yiska sped up, jumped over the stream and sniffed around. But the scent of cat was gone, replaced by those of the peaceful forest. Yiska felt anything but peaceful. His panic level was rising as he raced up and down the bank, searching for a scent. His heart raced. His face felt hot. He was shivering with anxiety and dread.
He heard Placid's quiet voice behind him and the brute stopped moving, knees shaking as he stared into the forest. The silence between the two wolves was pronounced and pregnant as the alpha stood stock-still, facing away from Placid. "She's gone," his mate said. "She's gone," his brain said. But his heart...well, his heart didn't know what to think, but it definitely didn't want to give up. So Yiska had a problem. Did he listen to his heart, or his head?
Slowly the alpha turned around, his jaw set, his head low, his eyes dull and distant. He didn't look at Placid as he passed her on the way back to the meadow. He was sorry that he had growled at her, but he was still angry with her for giving up so easily.
Yiska blinked as he emerged into the meadow, confused for a moment? Why wasn't it gray and rainy? The sunny, flower-strewn meadow seemed too lively, too...happy for the mood of the wolves in it. Feeling entirely detached from the world, he stopped at the edge of the forest and looked toward the middle of the meadow at the remaining unharmed pups. All sitting near the den. At least they knew how to behave after a tragedy.
With a sigh he started forward again toward the den, ready to tend to the injured Koda.
