The night was dark, as nights usually were but tonight it seemed exceptionally so as she traveled across the terrain that marked her pads. The moon hung with lazy ease, but her glow seemed lost on the frame of Asdiza who was bright enough in herself to be seen crossing the tundra. Gentle flicks of the tail would indicate that she was calm, but the rapid movement of the pale yellow eyes seemed to prove otherwise. She was alert, the stained copper ears twitching with every sound the wind brought. There was a chill rising from the earth beneath her paws, and it caused a shiver to rip throughout her body. Though spring had returned to the land the snow had yet to melt and she could feel the slush building up beneath her pads. She picked her steps carefully, navigating through the mountainous region with apparent ease. Though she didn’t feel entirely comfortable on this topography it was something she could get used too. Asdiza caught on quickly.
It was easy to get lost in thought around this area when it was so quiet, she found herself thinking of her family and wondering if they were still alive. She guessed it was for the best that she didn’t know. Asdiza didn’t pursue the thought for long, instead she focused on the scents that marked the area and led her to her destination. If everything went correctly she would find the top of the mountain soon and she could see the true beauty this land had to offer…but as the wind shifted directions and the scent trails became harder to find it seemed apparent to Asdiza that this peak would be harder to find than anticipated.
Her paw prints were now riddled across the mountain terrain allowing anyone bothering to pay attention a prime trail to her existence. Asdiza rose her head and glaring at the sky she focused on the stars the littered the black blanket. From her height it was easier to see them and pin-point the brightest and largest ones. This fascinated her, so much so that she forgot her destination and decided to pad onward only a tad further. The patched tail of copper and gray flicked back and forth while her pastel yellow eyes focused on nothing in particular. She noticed everything all at once, the swaying of the trees and their leaves, and the sound of the wind gently caressing the blades of grass by her feet. As she stepped the crunch of hard dirt beneath her paws could be heard, and high, high above in the sky there was the single form of a bird.
She decided then that she liked it here and suddenly Asdiza raised her slender muzzle to the sky and breathed in deeply, holding the chill breath in her lungs. A moment later she released a song so vivid and feral that had anyone heard it, it would have chilled them to the bone. Her voice was melodic, so much so that Asdiza closed her eyes against the sound, remembering the days when her pack would sing together in India. Remembering the days when her father’s tune would take up the lullaby that filled the night, and complete a sonnet only meant for the wolves.
