The mother and her pups padded uneasily to the border. It was a beautiful summer's day, gorgeous for a walk. The pups were still young, but where the mother planned to go was going to be all right. With Placid and her young, there was no room for her and her own litter. It was a long, hard decision, but, eventually, she decided she would leave. She would go and live along with this new Alphesse, who called herself Zena, in the White Lake Pack. She wasn't good with the cold atmosphere, and, although they would migrate back and forth from the mountains, it would still be chilly at the bottom, still cold no matter what. That's the way this territory was.
She led her little group along the mountain territory, careful not to let any pups stumble from the side, on her way to the borders. It was easy, and she had to keep nudging Cesar into line. Suddenly, Cailean looked at his mother, eyes bright. "Mom, where are we goin'?" he asked in a quiet tone. Mausi took a deep breath and looked at her young pup. He looked so sweet and innocent. "We're leaving the mountains. Go play while I call Yiska or Placid," she mumbled. She knew the chances of Placid coming were low, considering she had just whelped a few days ago. Cailean bounded off with his siblings, while Mausi raised her maw into the air, letting out a long song, asking for the Alpha's to come, to say good-bye.
The alpha carried his head high as he traveled along the treacherous ridges of the bare, rocky mountains that made up much of his territory. Until recently Yiska had had trouble thinking of himself as the alpha of the pack, but the birth of his pups--his seven mischievous angels--had changed that. Being a father demanded much more responsibility than he had ever shown before, but now he was hunting almost constantly to keep Placid fed and producing enough milk for all seven of the pups, and keeping them out of trouble and entertained. Soon they would leave the den for the first time and Yiska's job would get ten times more difficult. If Yiska was responsible enough to be a father, he was responsible enough to be an alpha.
He was searching out a herd of mountain goats--Placid's favorite--when he heard the howl. The voice was familiar. He changed directions and soon reached Mausi, the female who had arrived broken and pregnant at his door, and given birth minutes after. He hadn't seen her for several days, having been preoccupied with his own family, and he was surprised and glad to see how much better she looked. Healed, better-fed, happier, and her pups--what were their names?--looked healthy too. He smiled as he approached her. "Good morning, Mausi, you're looking much better today. I trust all is well with you and your pups?" While the niceties had to be observed, Yiska couldn't help but wonder why she had called. The fact that she was on the border was certainly a hint, and the alpha had a hunch about what she had to say. He would be sad to see her go, and he had thought she might stay because of Makato, but realistically there was no place for her in the Gray Mountain Pack. It would take a huge effort to feed her pups along with his and Placid's seven, especially with only two wolves in the pack who could be expected to hunt (the others being mothers).
Mausi had been waiting a few moments, her mind mostly preoccupied, wondering if the Aloha were to come. Just as she thought this, his scent came to her through the wind, and he came up to the mother, just as she had hoped. He gave her a warning smile, and spoke. He sounded so formal now, so respectful. The femme smiled gracefully, glancing over to check and be sure her pups weren't killing each other, or falling off the edge. She gave a quiet chuckle as Catori and Cheveyo ambush Cailean, who spun to play fight back. As usual, Cesar was sitting all alone, staring at something. That one worried her, but she never really said anything. He and Makato had bonded so much, he would be so sad to see them be separated. But what must be done, must be done.
Mausi always respected the Alpha's; they were so kind to take her in so quickly, Placid helping her through the painful time of giving birth too soon. But she knew it was time to leave, whether she liked it or not, and give the Alpha's their space and time. Seven pups was already a lot, eleven being far too many for two -- possibly three -- to hunt for. It would be too hard. The femme nodded easily, "Hello, Yiska. Yes, we're well, thanks to you and Placid. How are your offspring doing?" She asked cautiously, her formality matching his. This was going to be hard, to say good bye. For encouragement, she glanced at her pups again. Easy. It was for them. "I called to say good bye. As much as I respect you and your mate, it is time I leave, for the lives of our pups and your pack. I called to say farewell and give you wishes for the future," Her voice nearly cracked at the end, but she kept it even. There was no need for tears. She'd see them again someday.

Yiska nodded graciously in acknowledgement of the aid he and Placid had given Mausi in her time of need, but he would not forget that Makato had been the one to find and carry her all the way up the mountain to the pack. He was sure that Mausi had not forgotten his heroics, either.
A smile broke over the alpha's face smiled as the female mentioned his pups. He couldn't help it. They brought him so much joy. "They're wonderful, thank you." Yiska would have been happy to talk about his pups a little more, but this moment was not about him or his happiness. He listened intently and sincerely as Mausi confirmed his suspicions about her future, and was surprised to hear the emotion that crept into her voice. He hadn't known that she had grown so attached to the pack. He stepped towards her and touched his nose to her head briefly to comfort her. "I understand," he said. "I am sad that this day has come. I wish you the best of luck wherever you choose to go and I want you to know that you and your children are always welcome here."
Soft orbs watched the pride on Yiska's face as he replied about his pups. Mai smiled. She knew how the pride felt. They were doing good. That was great. Poor Placid needed a little bit of a break. Even through the sadness of saying good bye, one of the few things she thought of right now was Makato. Would he be sad she left? How would he feel? Sadness crept into her visage, and it was slightly obvious what she was thinking about. He touched his nose to her fore head briefly, and comfort came from this small action. She smiled at him easily.
He wished her luck, and she gave a nod of respect, before she took a few steps to her pups, giving them gentle nudges with her nose to move along. She didn't want to speak, in case her voice cracked. She gave Cesar an extra nudge, whispering Makato's name to him once before she continued down the hill, her pups following behind closely, tumbling and stumbling along, playing and generally enjoying themselves. It was that simple.

Cesear didn't want to play, actually he wanted to see how it would feel to jump off the rocky, bare ledge. Smiling at the thought, then registering that it wasn't a question but a demand, Cesear glumly walked off, far behind, with the other pups. Instead of playing with the others, he sat down by a big rock. More interested in the rock then the tumbling pups. "How are we even related?" Cesear asked the rock. Chuckled at its imaginary reply, and eyed some newly fledged grass.
Mausi had finished her conversation with Yiska and was walking back to her pups. "I am having a talk with Dorpy. I don't want to go." Feeling his temper rise, Cesear didn't try and stop it, he didn't know how. Mai whispered Makatos name, Cesear hurriedly stood up and followed his mother obediently.
Makato lunched at the mountain goat, breaking its neck on impact. He had figured out how to kill it without pain or much of a fight. Although he wasn't trying to impress Placid anymore, mountain goat was good food that lasted awhile. Next Makato would try and find any remaining snowshoe hares, which was what Mai liked. Scouring the land for the hopping food, he successfully found two and, again, used his usually gentle mitts to soundlessly murder the hares. Bringing them back to the food storage den, where he had also brought the goat back to. After he had arranged the food, he bounded to his den, where Mai was staying, when he didn't see her he trotted through the rest of the dens, unsuccessful in his search he was beginning to worry, until he heard her soft howl, quizzical of why she was summing the alpha. Yiska padded by down to his borders. Giving him a nod on the way by, Makato decided to wait and talk to her later. Curiosity followed him until it was almost unbearable. Curiosity always got the best of Makato, but this time he was determined to wait it out. Busying himself with cleaning up his den. You could defiantly tell that pups had been in there, it wasn't messy just there was rains of resent activities and games. Leaving the corner the Cesear liked alone, he didn't want to upset the little guy. Although Cesear was different, Makato knew that Cesear liked him, he returned the same feeling, and he didn't want to mess that up. Thoughts of the pups playing and talking crossed Makatos mind. A smile appeared on his visage. Finding himself humming, no tune inpeticular, swaying his tail to the beat.
Mausi was waiting for Makato, when she remembered, he was probably waiting for her in the den. Quickly, she managed to snatch all four pups in her maw, and raced off to the den. She slid in, setting her pups down and running into Makato. "Makato!" she panted, standing right in front of him, "I.. I'm leaving," She murmured, staring into his orbs for a few moments, waiting for his reply.

Makato was just finishing up his cleaning, when Mai ran into him. Quickly regaining his balance, he turned toward Mai and a smile krept up into his visage, which was briskly wiped away when she spoke. Eyes searching her face, a large ration of sadness filled him. "Why? Did I do something?" Confusion, sadness, and a trace of guilt was written on Makato's face. What did I do? She looked so happy just the other day. Did Placid say something? No, she would have told me... Did Yiska? Is there not enough food? I have been hunting almost every second day, there must be enough food... But then again Placid did just have her pups and that means seven more mouths to feed... Possiblities flooded his mind, but rejected each one. Every time coming back to the idea that he did something.
When the news was announced, Makato's sweet, sweet smile disappeared. The heartbroken maiden held that picture of his face for many more moments. "Did you do anything?" she murmured, her words amused, "Yes," she whispered, nuzzling her face into Makato's chest, "You made my life just perfect,"and I love you, She whispered, allowing a hidden tear to slip down her cheek, before pulling her head out and looking her dear friend in the eyes, "But, it is time I go and spread my wonders to another pack. There's no more room for us here, with seven other wonders to fill,"and you're too good for me, She raised her voice, allowing a fake smile to play on her lips, "But you be good, and don't go looking for trouble now, you hear?" she joked feebly in her motherly tone.

Makato listened and his heart broke when she answered yes to that he did something to make her want to leave, the stitches that had carefully and caringly mended his heart back together didn't unravel, that would mean gentleness, they ripped apart and his legs became weak, his head dizzy, eyes glazed. Although she said that he made her life perfect there was no undoing what had happened, slowly it began to carelessly mend begging him for no more pain.
It felt so farmilar when Mai put her head to Makato's chest, their bodies molded to fit the others. A distant memory wiggled on the edge of his mind, but every time he reached for it it raced away. When she pulled away from him there was a shimmer of water in her eyes. Dropping his eyes, not wanting her to see the endless pain displayed in them. Half-heartedly chuckled at her attempt at a joke. "Same goes for you. Any pack will be blessed to have your pressence.. and your pups. I hope our paths cross in the future.. Say good bye to Ceaser for me, and the other little rascals. Good luck in your next pack...and" I love you " everyone will miss you incredibly.."
Mai felt a sad, sad, terrible feeling well inside her, wishing he would protest, or something. But all she could do was listen to his words, hanging onto each one with her whole heart, wrapping them with care. She gave his cheek an affectionate lick, before she nodded, afraid that her voice would crack if she spoke. All she could do is whisper, "Meet me at Driftwood Beach at the next full moon," she gave him a quick nuzzle and took off out of the cave, disappearing out of the site and grabbing each pup by the scruff of their necks before racing down the mountain. When she reached the bottom, she set down both pups and allowed hearty sobs to fill her lungs. After a few moments, she calmed down and let out a howl of goodbye, no longer signalling the Alpha's, before she turned to leave the area, before she could be tracked down, her pups tumbling along beside her. Goodbye, is hard, in many different levels. This, was nearly impossible. Goodbye, is hard.

A small smile krept upon Makato's visage, with her lick came happiness. Nodding his head while he replied. "I wouldn't miss it." Makato watched her with sadness as she left, she scooped up her pups and continued on her way, to weare ever she was going.
Ceaser whined and twisted and turned when Mai picked him up. "No! Let go!" screaming Ceaser slipped out of her grip Once he was out of her grasp, Ceaser walked quietly along beside her nodding at some trees, rocks and bushes along the way. Growling at a few mysterious ones, his orbs observed the surronding with an intensity, as if he were memerizing every detail, knowing this may be the last time he traveled this route.
