It was dawn and a bit chilly. Yiska sat outside the alphas' den where Placid still slept, waiting for her. Watching for danger. The snow had been melting for the past few weeks and now it was very unstable. Avalanches had been occurring throughout the mountains, but luckily--or perhaps on purpose?--the densite was located on a more exposed slope so the wind had kept much snow from building up throughout the winter. Still. Anything could happen.
By now the snow had melted completely from the forest below and it was teeming with life. Deer, rabbits, elk, squirrels, bears, foxes, badgers, bobcats--some had been present and active throughout the winter, but many had woken from hibernation or returned from far away to the warm and rich forest. Yiska missed it. Visiting it every other day or so was just not enough to fill the space in his heart that the forest in the territory of his old pack had filled. He hoped Placid would awake soon.
Vivid dreams, ones of her past. But lately, her dreams have shifted. No longer were they torurous pictures of corpses and the blood-chilling howls, but instead they were dreams if racing along the mountain side with Yiska, hunting, playing. Everything they did was in sync, as if they shared a mind. She had never felt like this before, other than with Brun. Brun, her mate that had passed on. She no longer grieved on him, now that she was with Yiska. Brun was simply a memory full of memories, but he was gone now. There was nothing she could do about it. But, even their relationship was different. This relationship with Yiska was strong, powerful. Something the ivory alphesse will never forget.
The slim built Placid awoke from a series of peaceful dreams, far too unique. She yawned, and realized, when her side got a chill, that Yiska had disappeared. She glanced out side of the den, to see her mate sitting there peacefully. She padded out and sat beside him, their coats pressed together. "Morning, sunshine. How did you sleep?"
the past is a wonderful place to visit, but not to stay
The sound of movement from inside the den brought Yiska's attention to Placid, who was stepping outside. The sight of her, lovely, pure white coat shining in the morning sunlight, brought a smile to his face. He leaned on her, just a bit of his weight, enjoying the contact. "Great," he answered. He had had no dreams so was very well rested. "Like a log. Do you want to do anything today?" Sitting still had been difficult for the alpha thanks to that restorative sleep. He had so much energy today. He hoped he would get to go to the forest. This mountainside was beautiful and all, and he was happy to live on it with Placid, but he could not resist the call of the forest for long.
Just his touch had her in a tizzy, her heart pounding and her mind spinning as he pressed up against her, putting the littlest amount of his weight on her. She smiled, and tilted her head slightly, resting it on his shoulder. She could hear the birds, the sun shinning brightly on her light, white pelt. She closed her optics for a moment, letting the warm sun soak in. Her eyes were soft and calm as they opened again, before she lifted her head and looked at Yiska. Great, slept like a log. Do you want to do anything today?" the brown Alpha had asked. A sweet smile spread across the ivory femmes facade. "Actually, yes, I do. But I have no clue what. You have any ideas?" the Alphesse replied, her smile growing.

"Well," he chuckled, "you know me. I want to go to the forest." Every chance he got he went into to the forest and explored a little more of it. Since the snow had melted he'd been able to see that it was actually a very different forest than the one he had lived in. Further north it was snowy for so much of the year that nothing but the hardiest trees could grow, so in the summer the ground was almost bare. Placid's forest was warmer and so allowed more small, green things to grow. A small, leafy tree with delicious red berries on it was his favorite, but he also loved the moss on the trees and the ferns that thrived in the shade. "That reminds me, Placid. I have something to ask of you." He cleared his throat. This was turning out to be a little harder to talk about than he had though. "I saw how you looked at Mausi's pups....Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't help but think you want some of your own." He was tempted to stop here, but now that he was talking he decided to plow ahead. "If that's the case, I feel like this mountainside would be a little dangerous for them. They could fall. If you do want a family, I think we should move to the forest where it's less cold and...precarious. Plus, the pack could live there whenever weather in the mountains gets too extreme."
The forest. Of course. She had learned that Yiska loved the forest almost as much as she loved the mountains. She smiled a sweet smile, nuzzling his neck. "Of course! I had nothing in mind anyway." She replied lightly, happy to go wherever her mate wanted to go. She stood up and shook all of the debris and dust from her coat, before she took a few steps in the general direction, glancing back over her shoulder toward Yiska.
She spun around completely as he began to say something else. Her visage turned red and went hot. To the ivory Alphesse, it felt like it was going to singe her fur to ashes. She smiled in embarrassment. Of course he would notice! Of course, he was right. "Well, I certainly can't correct you," the femme muttered quietly, "But I do agree. We'll visit there today, okay?" Placid raised her voice, and figured she would get this over with, "Why? Do you want pups as well?" She asked in a hushed tone, afraid of if he would say now. She was excited at the thought of pups, ecstatic. But it was up to Yiska.
the past is a wonderful place to visit, but not to stay
Yiska's heart pounded with both excitement and embarrassment when Placid confirmed his suspicions. At the moment the thought of living in the forest was second in his mind. Yiska wanted pups too, so hearing that Placid did was a relief, but it also added an element of seriousness to their relationship. Raising a family was a big deal. It would commit them to each other for a long time, at least until the pups grew up. Not that that was a problem for the alpha. He had grown even more attached to Placid in the days since their escapade at the waterfall, but the thought of having pups just made it seem more...real. Like he would have to be careful do do everything right, both in interacting with Placid and in raising his offspring.
He stood facing her, his face too hot in this rather delicate situation. But he nodded as confidently as he could. Though he knew that pups would be a huge responsibility, his face lit up at the thought of them, running around, playing in the summer sun.
When he nodded, Placid's face brightened. Her smile was a big goofy grin, and she bounded toward Yiska. With Yiska, she could be herself, trusting him completely. She would replace awkward moments with play and enjoy them instead. She would enjoy every moment she had with him. He wanted pups as well, and that's all that mattered in her mind right now. She prodded him with her paw, and spun away, attempting to, without words, tell him to follow her. She had something to show her.
The ivory maiden raced off, her paws barely touching the ground as she flew down the mountain, nearly falling twice, but catching her balance just as easily. She sprung herself into the forest when she neared the bottom, landing neatly on the ground, without losing speed, she burst faster into the forest. She glanced back to see if Yiska was following as she dodged trees, before she pulled into the beautiful area. There was a huge, sparkling lake in the middle and a huge clearing with hollowed out trees and rocks piled high. Surely, he would like this area. She slowed down and sat in the middle of the clearing as she waited for her mate, letting out a slow, soft howl, that sounded like a song, pretty and perfectly pitched to pinpoint her location.

Yiska grinned as Placid's expression turned joyful, and he couldn't help laughing when she prodded him and ran. He followed, barreling down the hill almost recklessly, feeling invincible. But his footing was sure and he made it to the edge of the forest in once piece, although he had lost sight of Placid. He looked up and scanned the branches of the trees, remembering her early charade, as he trotted deeper into the forest. A howl caught his attention, her voice soaring like a raven through the trees. He picked up his pace again and soon broke out of the trees and into a wide meadow, full to the brim of sunlight and wildflowers. Some spots had clusters of huge boulders, and his eyes immediately fell on them, his brain working a mile a minute. He bounded over to the nearest one, The rocks were embedded in the face of a small, grassy slope, but a space between them would make a perfect den. He sniffed it. The scent of fox emanated from it, but it was faint and probably old. The fox was long-gone. He stuck his head in. The den was small, but it could be enlarged.
Coming back out into the meadow, he ran towards Placid, yipping with joy. "This is perfect!" he declared, tackling the white wolf to the ground, tail wagging out of control.
Throughout the whole race, the ivory coated Alphesse had felt her mate on her heels the whole entire time. She had pushed herself faster and harder, panting by the time she had reached the bottom of the mountain. It was then, with her lengthy spring, that she had lost him, darting into the forest faster than a hare chased by a fox. When she had howled for him, she could smell him as he got nearer, and then watched him race around, sniffing the small pile of boulders. He charged at her and tackled her, knocking her petite body to the ground. She began to laugh endlessly. She tucked her head into his chest, and flipped over. With quick, swift movements, the femme managed to squirm out from his tackle and dance back, her body crouched low, her plume on a slow-motion wag. She grinned. "Come get me," The femme murmured in a purring, raspy tone, the words rolling off of her tongue.

Several minutes later, the deed was done. Yiska lay on his back in the meadow, imagining how different his life was now from how it was a year ago. How it was a couple of months ago, even. He had been a wanderer, completely aimless. Now he was stable, with a mate, a pack, and a family on the way.And how different his life would be in a couple more months! In ten weeks his pups would have been born. In fifteen, they would be running around playing, getting lost, having adventures of their own. In this very meadow. Yiska sat up so he could see over the grass, and looked around. Tress on all sides except the lake that would be the lake his children would drink from. He was a little worried about the lake, but he would be careful to watch over anyone who wanted to go swimming. He looked down at Placid, smiling. "Do you want to think about names yet?"
The white femme layed on the ground beside her mate, smiling happily. She was going to have pups! Her eyes sparked a lighter color at the thought. She nuzzled into Yiska's shoulder, smiling. "Names? Sure. I have a few for girls, none for boys really. Daika or Dainika and Quarts," the ivory she-wolf suggested, shrugging her shoulders. They should probably pick five names for each gender, she figured. Just in case. She looked up at Yiska, smiling happily at the thought of pups.

Strange names, he thought, but maybe that was because she had been raised around names like that. Wolves in Yiska's pack had tended to have rather different names. As a result, he didn't really like the names Placid suggested, but he would try not to hurt her feelings. "Isn't quartz a rock or something?" he asked. Personally, if they were going to name one of their pups after a mineral, he would prefer it be mica. "How about Mica?" he suggested. "It could be a male or female name...although it does sound a little more feminine. I also like Olivia." He had to think hard to come up with male names. "How about Rune for a boy?"
She could tell he was slightly hesitant, over what the ivory femme was not quite sure. She shrugged. The names she had suggested had been... Slightly strange. When she was in a pack, she had a crazy aunt that she had loved so much. She always called the Alphesse, Placid, indeed Quartz or Daika. She had never had pups on her own, so instead, pampered her niece's and her nephews. But Placid was the only one who didn't complain about how crazy or weird she was, and actually had conversations with her.
Mica, she definitely liked that one. She was on the fence about Olivia a bit, and Rune was a sweet name she could see giving to a boy. She nodded. She liked both ways the names could go. From uncommon to common. It did not bother her one bit. "I really like Mica and Rune. I'm still not too sure about Olivia, no offence or anything. But Mica and Rune are sweet names. I like them," She quickly told him what she thought of his names he had suggested. She wasn't going to answer about Quartz. It was clear it didn't really like the name, which was perfectly fine.
Now. It was her turn. She twisted her head slightly, before she would let him suggest again. For a male, she thought of Ace, possible, and possibly Bausil. For a female, she thought of Luna and Hope. Possibly, Faith as well. She had quite a list, so he could cross off whichever it was that he didn't like. "I have a little bit more here. For males, what if we thought about Ace and Bausil, along with the name you had suggested, Rune. For girls, Lune, Hope and Faith are my suggestions, along with Mica for you. What do you think?" The alabaster femme asked quietly, quickly reminding him of the names he had chosen, just in case.

He nodded, happy she liked his names and relieved she hadn't been offended. Or maybe she had, but she didn't show it. If so, that was a mark of strength and courtesy, plus she was willing to compromise on the names. He couldn't help smiling at her. "You're great, you know," he said quietly, before he continued. "That's okay, I'm not too fond of Olivia anyway." He laid back down in the grass and closed his eyes, feeling a little sleepy from their recent activities and from the warm sun, but he didn't want to sleep. Yiska was one hundred percent content to lay here with his mate, discussing their future life.
Bausil, now there was another strange name. But he liked it more than the other strange ones she had suggested. He nodded again. "I like Bausil and Lune best out of those." His turn to think of some. So they had Mica, Rune, Bausil and Lune. Two boys, two girls. Any more than four pups would sure be a handful. But still. He thought of the nature around him, and immediately he thought of several names. "Okay, I've got Sage, Sorrel, Ivy, Fern...Echo, Lark..."
