Yiska could barely make out Placid's words, what with the water filling his ears and all, but it didn't matter anyway because he was about to DIE. And her sentence was cut short as a yelp of fear escaped her, and they both went over the edge, but he still didn't let go. He kept his eyes closed. He didn't want to see the dizzying height that would mean his death.
Then he hit the water.
But Yiska wasn't dead.
Why? In a few seconds Placid was gone and he opened his eyes. The sight was blurry, but he could tell he was in a deep pool. He surfaces, sputtering and looked around. The waterfall was just a few yards high. He looked at Placid and burst out laughing.
"Come here, you goon. You're the reason we found this place," The maiden laughed, her heart hammering in her chest. Of course it was his fault. He always made her so happy, too happy, to the point she's insane. That's what Brun, her old mate, did to her as well. Placid wished she could tell Yiska exactly how she felt, exactly how much she wanted to be with him, all the time. But she couldn't. Because she would probably appear weak and cry, these thoughts reminded her too much of Brun. And then she would have to burden him. Her mind elsewhere, the femme stopped laughing, her mind lost, a million miles away.
the past is a wonderful place to visit, but not to stay
Yiska grinned, still basking in the warm glow of her new personality, and swam to the shore. "You're welcome for that," he said. He shook his fur out, then looked around. The waterfall had made a deep impression in the earth. Steep, mossy walls rose up on either side of the waterfall while the stream continued on downhill. They were in a sort of glen, covered and surrounded by greenery. He chose a large rock covered in thick, squishy moss and stretched out on it, tired from his foray into the river, but he didn't sleep. He looked at Placid. She seemed to be thinking about something. He watched her and waited for her to come back to this time and place.
The ivory maiden's mind raced back to the time and place, so she could spend time with Yiska. She blinked her azure optics three times before she looked at him, looking at her. A grin split upon her maw. She stood up and padded over to the rock he was laying on. She could fit. With a graceful leap, she jumped up on the rock beside him. Being as cautious as she could, she curled her body into his, turning her face in to inhale his scent. It was calming and nice. With a soft sigh, she looked up at Yiska. "What now?" She asked him quietly, willing to do whatever he wanted to. She has had her fun for the day.
the past is a wonderful place to visit, but not to stay
He smiled as she came back, blinking as if stepping into the sunlight from a dark place. He made more room for her on his rock as she laid down and he laid his head next to hers. "Let's stay here a while. It's so peaceful." In Yiska's mind, nothing compared to the peaceful forest sounds of birds, squirrels and the rustling of tree branches, but if he thought hard enough, he could pretend that the sound of this water that, minutes ago, he thought would kill them both, was the wind up on the mountains. A little more relaxing than a raging torrent. However relaxed or unrelaxed the brown wolf was, he felt he could go to sleep now with Placid beside him. But he didn't want to. Something had been nagging him since he had met her. He gathered his courage. "Placid, what were you thinking about just now?"
He made more room for her, but she stayed close to him anyway, but she made sure he still had room. Staying here sounded good to her, she agreed. Something she didn't agree on was when he asked her what she was thinking about. Her body went stiff, her mind trying to get out of this trap, trying to find a way to escape his question. But, she realized, it's better he knows. He's important to her now, and that's what made her decide she was going to tell him. "My mate. Well, my old mate. He's dead now. I was thinking about how much you two resembled each other. He, and two of my pups, died looking for me in a snow storm. I had heard their howls, but thought nothing of them. Later that week, I found their corps'," The femme shuddered, and attempted to hold herself together, "I was thinking about how both of you made me act insane like this. Happy. Both of you put a smile of my face, and make my heart skip a beat," Her words, her emotions, were spilling like someone knocked over the bucket that the words have been hidden in all this time, "The way I always want to spend time with you, the way I always think about you and want to be sure you're okay," It was already out, no longer time to hide from the truth. If he didn't feel the same way about her, than she would leave and this day, the best day of her life, would be over.
the past is a wonderful place to visit, but not to stay
Yiska lifted his head and looked at her when he felt Placid's body go tense. He'd been afraid of this. He'd hit on a sensitive note and she just didn't want to talk about it. He was about to say "Forget it" when she started talking. Her story was tragic and he again put his face close to hers to try to comfort her. The deaths of loved ones were always hard to bear. He had had packmates die, and in a pack as close-knit as his old one, it had been like losing a brother or sister. But to lose three family members at once? Yiska could understand why it would have such an impact on the little wolf.
However, her next words made him happy. Ecstatic. He would have smiled but after hearing her story it felt inappropriate, so he drew back and looked at her as she finished, trying to say with his eyes what he needed to. "Placid," he began, "I feel the same way about you. You're sensible and level-headed--at least, you were up until today, when you were so playful. And...reckless." He chuckled, remembering their waterfall escapade. "I like both of those sides of you. Most people only have one side, and a lot of the time it's not a very pretty side. I'm so glad I found you in these huge mountains."
Her heart thudded harder in her chest as he spoke his feelings for her. Her harks pulsed, happiness and joy running through her mind. She was elated! She pushed her face into his chest, inhaling his wonderful scent. She tilted her head toward his and nuzzled his face, her sad thoughts gone. Even though her past had shaped her into what she was today, she had to put it behind her to live a happy future. A future that had Yiska in it. "Yiska," she began quietly, taking her head out of his chest to look him in the eyes, "Would you... Would you lead my pack with me? As the Alpha male and.. And my mate?" She knew this is what she wanted, she knew she wanted Yiska as a mate, as her Alpha, as the wolf she would spend the rest of her days with. She knew she wanted him.

Yiska heard her words, but he could hardly make sense of them. It sounded almost like the roar of the waterfall. This great, beautiful wanted him as a mate? Wanderer Yiska? He had known this even would eventually come in some form or another. One that called him to stay for the rest of his life or to leave and never return. Had he left the vagabond's lifestyle far enough behind to relinquish it? He looked into Placid's eyes, but his mind was far away, in the forests of his home, in the distant prairies and shorelines and deserts. Was he really willing give those up, his dreams of adventures in exotic places? A vision came to him. He saw himself and his mate one day bringing their pups to this very pool to play in the water. He saw a thriving pack racing across the windy slopes in hot pursuit of elk and goats, reveling in the companionship and acceptance of their packmates. He and Placid had their own forest whenever they wanted it, and it had become clear today that adventures in her territory still existed. "Yes," he said, all these thoughts having gone through his mind in only a second, and the biggest smile it felt like he had ever smiled appeared on his face. "I absolutely will."
At first, Placid almost thought he was going to turn her down and walk away, and it was, not quite, but almost, shocking the her when he said yes. Her ears perked with joy, and she let out a happy whimper. Her azure orbs were sparked with joy. Suddenly, she thought about Brun. She flinched back as the storm covered her vision, and suddenly, she was falling. Falling off the rock. And suddenly, she felt the water soaking through her pelt. She swam to the surface, an embarrassed expression on her face, before she reached up, grabbing Yiska with her teeth, and pulled him in. "Guess it's time to go swimming?" The femme laughed.

Yiska barely had time to smile at Placid before her eyes clouded and she jerked away from him and rolled down the hill. He jumped up but hesitated, confused, before anxiously bounding down toward the shore and waited beside the water, his eyes on the blurry white form that, thankfully, was surfacing. "Placid--" he began, but Yiska suddenly found himself underwater. He surfaced, coughing, and looked at the white wolf. Was she crazy? Had she lured him into her clutches only to reveal that she was utterly mad? He did his best to laugh convincingly along, but now he was worried. He swam the short distance to the bank and climbed out, his coat streaming water. It had just begin to dry out. "Why don't you get out of there," he suggested.
The expression on his face was worried, and all Placid could do was smile, embarrassed out of her mind. Of course, she was so stupid. She probably looked mental! With a sigh, she climbed out of the water, shaking the water off of her body. "I'm really sorry. I probably look mentally unstable, I promise I'm sane for the most part. I just saw the storm and the corps'" She shuddered again, "I'm sorry... It's my flaw. I worry about burdening others, that's why I keep my emotions to myself. I promise that I still love you, even if I shudder and fall off a rock when I'm looking at you," The femme giggled, and she licked his cheek gently. A promise. That's something that hasn't been made since her family died, other than to Yiska.

Yiska nodded in understanding. Visions. Not something he had ever encountered before, but he'd heard such strange things could happen and Yiska had in fact wondered if he'd meet a psychic in his travels. Of course, Placid just saw the past, but that seemed pretty potent to her. He couldn't imagine the grief she felt when those moments overcame her, and for Yiska it cast a nagging doubt on their new relationship. He felt bad that he had now sworn to love a still-grieving wolf, but he would not go back on his promise. Besides, maybe being with him would help her move on. Placid's words brought him relief and he laughed at her joke before returning her affection by reaching over her with his head and drawing her close to him with his chin. "Good," he said. "I wouldn't want to think it was me doing that to you."
Placid could still see worry on his face, covering his expression, but then he lightened up, laughing at her joke. The femme smiled the same goofy smile she's had on her face that whole day as he drew her closer with his chin, and said something about him doing that to her. She shook her head. No! He was insane. "No, you're not that bad looking," She teased lightly. She bumped her nose to his and gave him prod with her paw. "What now? You want to head back to the site, or what?"
the past is a wonderful place to visit, but not to stay
Yiska nodded. "Makato should know." The brown wolf had been able to tell over these past winter months that the only other wolf in the pack had a crush on Placid, and while Yiska had indeed felt jealous whenever something had happened between them--they went hunting together, they played, whatever--he had done a pretty good job of not showing it. Besides, it wasn't his place to get all bent out of shape over something like that. "Placid will choose whom she wants," he had told himself each time. Makato was a nice guy too. He just didn't have the harmony that Yiska and Placid did together. Sometimes it was as if they thought with one brain. Anyway, the new alpha would enjoy showing off his...catch.
On either side of the waterfall were steep slopes scattered with mossy boulders. Yiska's long legs conquered the climb in no time, so he waited at the top for Placid, ready to aid the smaller wolf if she needed him. He looked up and was stunned. He hadn't noticed while he was plummeting to his death, but the view from the top of this small cliff was breathtaking. The forest of fir trees stretched a long distance over the rolling foothills of Placid's--no, Yiska's and Placid's--mountains and over those of more mountains far away. "Is all this your territory?" he asked, hoping beyond hope that it was. The forest was Yiska's element.
